Ever wonder what a list of best 3DO games looks like? The 3DO was an exciting system which was hugely hyped, but ultimately failed. The 3DO as a system and concept was always going to be a gamble. Systems were not produced by the 3DO company, instead licenced to electronics manufacturers to produce their own versions of the hardware.

This resulted in higher console costs to the consumer, but made it a potentially attractive proposition to the manufacturers. Ultimately the system failed due to not only this concept, but also being released slightly in advance of the all conquering Sony PlayStation. Here are the best 3DO games ever released:. Probably one of the more well known 3DO titles, The Need For Speed is my first mention as it is one that still is the most memorable for me. The Need For Speed features an excellent in-car view and really cutting edge for the time 3D graphics, in some ways it feels like an evolution from the likes of Road Rash, Need For Speed has much more refined physics and depth.

Time was already running out for the 3DO with the PlayStation on the horizon, but Road Rash demonstrated that there was life in the flawed console yet. With an excellent licences soundtrack featuring the likes of Soundgarden, Road Rash on the 3DO is one of the finest ways to race, fight and evade the police. You play as Edward Carnby, a private detective investigating strange paranormal goings on. Unlike current NFS titles, the game leaned more into the realistic racing simulation to give the user the immersive feeling of driving eight incredible supercars, including the Lamborghini Diablo and the Ferrari TR.

But the exotic track design and great attention to detail still made this title one of the best on the system. Each golem has its own abilities — such as healing, attacking at a distance, or casting spells.

Guardian War differentiates itself from other contemporary titles in the genre for its use of 3D animation, which was unusual at the time.

Rather than hiring underpaid amateurs like most other games used to get, Origin Systems went out of their way to employ big-name professionals. Escaping from Castle Wolfenstein had never looked this good. The game featured much better graphical fidelity than previous ports, with almost no pixelation and very fluid movement.

One of the most iconic titles on the 3DO was Captain Quazar, an isometric shooter full of satirical humor and wild narrative developments that keep it fresh to this day. While the sound effects were decidedly mediocre, the game shines for having some of the best graphics on the system, along with fantastic gameplay. After crash-landing in a jungle on Titan the largest moon of Saturn the amnesiac Conrad B.

It was a hit on the Neo Geo , and its 3DO port is just as good. It also includes all characters, and it features dynamic zoom during battles. Street Fighter II and its many subsequent iterations, including SSF II Turbo , were some of the most popular titles in arcades during the 90s — and this 3DO port is remarkably faithful to its cabinet counterpart.

It features tons of characters, flashy special moves, and a crunchy combo system that rewarded precision and input speed. The original Shockwave was a fantastic space-combat simulator that garnered a sizable fanbase back when it came out, and this new and improved expansion only made it better.

The sprites are tasteful and fluidly animated, the backgrounds are breathtaking , and the way it uses color to craft awe-inspiring scenarios was ahead of its time. You can choose between a Tank, a Helicopter, a Jeep, and an HRSV Multiple Launch Rocket System to triumph in a capture-the-flag competition that was awfully addictive if playing with friends — possibly its biggest selling point. Fun fact: Rather than spend resources creating new music for the game, developer Silent Software simply used public-domain classical music to fill the void, giving the game an odd yet special appeal.

In the mid 90s every developer was trying to market toward the younger male market by being edgy, gross, or just weird. You play as a chef in a space station who is fighting back against an alien attack. You start with just a frying pan, and fight against such weird aliens as those who are just butts that fire projectiles at you. The end result was pretty good, but it suffers some limitations from the hardware.

Still, what I appreciate most is the blistering sense of speed despite the pop in and field of view. Most will remember the weird FMV introductions for each character. Look at it like this. Even bad pizza is pizza, and the same can be said for Doom to some extent. Most gamers are surprised to learn that the 3DO did actually have a few role playing games. Guardian War is one of these such titles.

These are some of the original survival horror games in a traditional sense. It uses pre-rendered backgrounds, tank controls, and has an emphasis on puzzles. Alone in the Dark 2 focuses more on story than the original.

At least the game is more varied than the original. Cannon Fodder is going to make just about every list of the best games for any platform it was released on. The 3DO is no exception.

This real time strategy game is best played on PC but this 3DO port is no slouch. It has all the content, and controls surprisingly well for using a directional pad. The 3DO generally struggled with 3D graphics even despite that name, come on are you kidding me? Road Rash however bucks this trend and is more playable than the vast majority of racing titles for the platform.

You drive various courses, earn money, upgrade your motorcycle, and attack everyone else on the road. Space Hulk is one of those few video games where you can tell the developers put their heart and soul into it. They had an ambitious vision and did their best to see it to fruition. This is a first person shooter, but with an emphasis on real time strategy elements. You guide a team of terminators through corridor like stages complete with a very useful mini-map.

It has some survival horror elements which I also love as well. Space Hulk is very underrated in my opinion. Casper was an old animated series but this is based on the 90s film. Here we have it; the best traditional Japanese style strategy RPG for the platform. You guide your party through a variety of different environments interacting with characters and progressing the story.

Battles are grid based, but thanks to the ultimate processing powers of the platform these are fully 3D battlefields with a rotating camera. There are a lot of zooms during story sequences that are real eyesores. The classics however are gaming comfort food for me.

Wolfenstein 3D is one of these such titles. It was ported to a few different platforms but the 3DO version has a special place in my heart. This game looks great by system standards and stands up pretty well against the PC version. I like the redrawn elements which help to give this port its own identity.

It also helps that the audio is phenomenal in this version. I love Wolfenstein 3D, and this port holds a special place for me. What is clearly one of the greatest video games of all time is obviously also one of the best 3DO titles. Of all the Mortal Kombat clones this one is among my favorites.
