Check occasionally to make sure the mast is still tightened to the antenna base located on the hood of the vehicle. Please start with a very important safety device in your vehicle: Buckle up. Page Drunken Driving Drunken Driving Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is a national tragedy.

It is the number one contributor to the highway death toll, claiming thousands of victims every year. Page According to the American Medical Association, a lb 82 kg person who drinks three 12 ounce ml bottles of beer in an hour will end up with a BAC of about 0. Page But the ability to drive is affected well below a BAC of 0. Research shows that the driving skills of many people are impaired at a BAC approaching 0.

All drivers are impaired at BAC levels above 0. They are the brakes, the steering, and the accelerator. All three systems have to do their work at the places where the tires meet the road.

Some people drive in spurts — heavy acceleration followed by heavy braking — rather than keeping pace with traffic. This is a mistake. Your brakes may not have time to cool between hard stops. Your brakes will wear out much faster if you do a lot of heavy braking. Page Let us say the road is wet and you are driving safely.

Suddenly, an animal jumps out in front of you. You slam on the brakes and continue braking. Here is what happens with ABS: A computer senses that wheels are slowing down. If one of the wheels is about to stop rolling, the computer will separately work the brakes at each wheel. You may feel a slight brake pedal pulsation or notice some noise, but this is normal.

Braking in Emergencies With anti-lock brakes, you can steer and brake at the same time. To limit wheel spin, especially in slippery road conditions, you should always leave the system on. But you can turn the traction control system off if you ever need to. You should turn the system off if your vehicle ever gets stuck in sand, mud or snow and rocking the vehicle is required.

It means that an advanced computer-controlled system has come on to help your vehicle continue to go in the direction in which you are steering. StabiliTrak activates when the computer senses that your vehicle is just starting to spin, as it might if you hit a patch of ice or other slippery spot on the road. In the limited mode, the traction control system will only use engine traction-control and is limited in its ability to provide optimal performance since the system will not utilize brake traction-control to control slip on the drive Page Steering Steering Power Steering If you lose power steering assist because the engine stops or the system is not functioning, you can steer but it will take much more effort.

Steering Tips It is important to take curves at a reasonable speed. Page Steering In Emergencies Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy. Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. For one thing, following too closely reduces your area of vision, especially if you are following a larger vehicle.

Also, you will not have adequate space if the vehicle ahead suddenly slows or stops. Page Loss Of Control Loss of Control Let us review what driving experts say about what happens when the three control systems — brakes, steering, and acceleration — do not have enough friction where the tires meet the road to do what the driver has asked.

In any emergency, do not give up. One reason is that some drivers are likely to be impaired — by alcohol or drugs, with night vision problems, or by fatigue. Here are some tips on night driving.

On a wet road, you cannot stop, accelerate, or turn as well because your tire-to-road traction is not as good as on dry roads. And, if your tires do not have much tread left, you will get even less traction. So much water can build up under your tires that they can actually ride on the water. This can happen if the road is wet enough and you are going fast enough. When your vehicle is hydroplaning, it has little or no contact with the road.

And be especially careful when you pass another vehicle. Get a city map and plan your trip into an unknown part of the city just as you would for a cross-country trip.

If you have a clear view of the freeway as you drive along the entrance ramp, you should begin to check traffic. Are all windows clean inside and outside? If you drive regularly in steep country, or if you are planning to visit there, here are some tips that can make your trips safer and more enjoyable. Your brakes will have to do all the work of slowing down.

They could get so hot that they would not work well. You would then have poor braking or even none going down a hill. Also see Tires on page Page What is the worst time for this? Wet ice. Very cold snow or ice can be slick and hard to drive on. But wet ice can be even more trouble because it may offer the least traction of all. Even though you have ABS, you will want to begin stopping sooner than you would on dry pavement.

Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful. This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle.

This saves fuel. When you run the engine, make it go a little faster than just idle. That is, push the accelerator slightly. This uses less fuel for the heat that you get and it keeps the battery charged. That will clear the area around your front wheels. If your vehicle has traction control, you should turn your traction control system off. The tire and loading information label shows the number of occupant seating positions A , and the maximum vehicle capacity weight B in kilograms and pounds.

Page 4. The label shows the gross weight capacity of your vehicle. The GVWR includes the weight of the vehicle, all occupants, fuel, and cargo.

Page Towing If you put things inside your vehicle — like suitcases, tools, packages, or anything else, they will go as fast as the vehicle goes.

If you have to stop or turn quickly, or if there is a crash, they will keep going. Some vehicles have restrictions on how far and how long they can tow. Page Level Control Level Control On vehicles equipped with automatic level control, the rear of the vehicle is automatically kept level as you load or unload your vehicle. See Loading Your Vehicle on page You may hear the compressor operating when you load or unload your vehicle, and periodically as the system self-adjusts.

Trailering means changes in handling, acceleration, braking, durability, and fuel economy. Successful, safe trailering takes correct equipment, and it has to be used properly. That is the reason for this section.

In it are many time-tested, important trailering tips and safety rules. It depends on how you plan to use your rig. For example, speed, altitude, road grades, outside temperature, and how much your vehicle is used to pull a trailer are all important.

It can also depend on any special equipment that you have on your vehicle, and the amount of tongue weight the vehicle can carry. Page Weight Of The Trailer Tongue Weight of the Trailer Tongue The tongue load A of any trailer is an important weight to measure because it affects the total or gross weight of your vehicle. The Gross Vehicle Weight GVW includes the curb weight of the vehicle, any cargo you may carry in it, and the people who will be riding in the vehicle.

Page Consider the following example: A vehicle model base weight is 5, lbs 2 kg ; 2, lbs 1 kg at the front axle and 2, lbs 1 kg at the rear axle. Page The effect of tongue weight is about 1. Dividing the lbs kg by 1. Since tongue weight is usually at least 10 percent of total loaded trailer weight, you can expect that the largest trailer your vehicle can properly handle is 6, lbs 2 kg.

Page Safety Chains Safety Chains You should always attach chains between your vehicle and your trailer. Cross the safety chains under the tongue of the trailer to help prevent the tongue from contacting the road if it becomes separated from the hitch. Instructions about safety chains may be provided by the hitch manufacturer or by the trailer manufacturer. You cannot see or smell CO. It can cause unconsciousness or death. See Engine Exhaust on page Page Following Distance Following Distance Stay at least twice as far behind the vehicle ahead as you would when driving your vehicle without a trailer.

This can help you avoid situations that require heavy braking and sudden turns. Passing You will need more passing distance up ahead when you are towing a trailer. Page Driving On Grades Driving on Grades Reduce speed and shift to a lower gear before you start down a long or steep downgrade.

If you do not shift down, you might have to use your brakes so much that they would get hot and no longer work well. Page Service Service Your dealer knows your vehicle best and wants you to be happy with it. We hope you will go to your dealer for all your service needs.

You will get genuine GM parts and GM-trained and supported service people. We hope you will want to keep your GM vehicle all GM. This may cause wind noise and affect windshield washer performance. Check with your dealer before adding equipment to the outside of your vehicle. See the underhood emission control label. Do not use fuel containing methanol. It can corrode metal parts in your fuel system and also damage the plastic and rubber parts. That damage would not be covered under your warranty.

To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island. Turn off your engine when you are refueling. Do not smoke if you are near fuel or refueling your vehicle.

Fuel can spray out on you if you open the fuel cap too quickly. This spray can happen if your tank is nearly full, and is more likely in hot weather. Open the fuel cap slowly and wait for any hiss noise to stop. Static electricity discharge from the container can ignite the gasoline vapor. You can be badly burned and your vehicle damaged if this occurs. Pull the hood release handle with this symbol on it. Go to the front of the vehicle and push the underhood release to the right.

Page The coolant level should be at or above the full cold mark. If it is not, you may have a leak at the pressure cap or in the radiator hoses, heater hoses, radiator, water pump, or somewhere else in the cooling system. You can add the proper coolant mixture directly at the pressure cap port, but be sure the cooling system is cool before you do it. Coolant contains ethylene glycol and it will burn if the engine parts are hot enough.
