One of those students is Jonathan Yasin, a Long Island native who is a freshman at Pitt who began taking courses in the public health degree program in his first semester last fall.
Yasin wants to be a physician but said he was attracted to Pitt's undergraduate public health program because of its interdisciplinary nature encompasses not only science and math but also history, political science and sociology. Yasin said he appreciated that the courses weren't all just bookwork and tests, and that there were substantial amounts of discussion in each. And he loved the weeklong work in the field that was required for a course, where he volunteered for a week at a Wilkinsburg vaccine clinic.
The experience solidified his feelings about public health and medicine, and he worked alongside physicians, nurses and other health professionals.
