History of the halo game

When it comes to placing Halo games in order, this one sits roughly between the events of Halo 3 and 4. It gives players the chance to control Spartan Sarah Palmer as she fights against the Covenant.

Even though the game released after Halo 4, lore-wise, its events occur before. Palmer is an interesting character in the Halo universe, and it's nifty to be able to experience a part of her story. Although the game had fairly mixed reviews, it garnered enough attention to eventually create a sequel. Halo 4 is the first game in the Reclaimer Saga and is also the first mainline Halo title to be solely created by Industries.

The story picks up four years after the events of Halo 3. Master Chief and Cortana are pitted against the Forerunner known as the Didact, as well as a splinter faction of the Covenant. The threat of the Didact pales in comparison to the tragedy of Cortana's onset of AI rampancy. As she and the Chief struggle to undo the Didact's plans, they have to contend with her deteriorating condition. Halo 4 put extra focus on the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana throughout the campaign, and the multiplayer underwent massive changes as well, incorporating loadouts as an integral part of the experience.

This game technically takes place during two time periods: partially during Halo 2 and partially during events after Halo 4. The game primarily focuses on the player hunting down an artifact called the Conduit.

This artifact was first located in the ruins of New Mombasa, but it got transported to a Halo ring. The struggle to obtain it is the main objective of the narrative.

Narrative takes a back seat to gameplay in this arcade-style title. This short entry in the Halo franchise barely whets the appetite for lore-hungry fans. Halo 5: Guardians is the middle entry in 's trilogy of Halo games. In under a decade, Bungie had become The Beatles of game design, flying a banner that read one word: Halo. Pong spelt backwards. It was released in free of charge. Bungie quickly followed up with Minotaur: Labyrinths of Crete which Jones wrote while doing an artificial intelligence class.

Up until this point, Bungie programmed games exclusively for the Macintosh, while nearly all other games focused on Windows. Their next game was another FPS called Marathon and is the first-ever vertical shooter, allowing players to look up and down as well as jump to higher ground. After a Macworld Expo, Bungie was swarmed with interest leading to a sequel, Marathon 2: Durandal , introducing co-op into shooters for the first time.

A trait which later became a Bungie staple. Following this, Bungie made a leap to strategy games with Myth: The Fallen Lords another critical success for the genre, winning several awards and earning a large online community. In , Bungie announced its ambitious next project, Halo: Combat Evolved. Originally conceived as a top-down, real-time strategy game, it soon grew into an FPS, a genre the company was now renowned for. When it dropped with the Xbox on November 15, , the applause was deafening.

Halo: Combat Evolved broke sales records, selling a million copies within 5 months, and now being shifted in tandem with all Xbox consoles. Fans instantly fell in love with the story of Master Chief, the Covenant, and the fearsome flood. The Spartan-II program is meant to suppress rebellions in a secretive manner. Shipping soldiers to various worlds, groups of soldiers take out those trying to create unrest in the galaxy.

While trying to keep rebellion at bay, human worlds are suddenly under the attack of the Covenant. This theocratic race of aliens is a collection of species reseeded by the Forerunners.

Because of this method of creation, the Covenant sees the Forerunners as their Gods. Thus, they begin a holy war of genocide against humans for acting as heretics against the plans of the Forerunners. One major stronghold is standing after the Covenant begin wiping out humans. Master Chief and an AI program, Cortana, escape from Reach and travel to random coordinates set by the ship, which just so happen to lead to the fourth Halo ring. From here, the games play out as Master Chief looks for a way to protect humanity, and in turn, the galaxy.
