Alex Ethridge Thread Starter. Joined Apr 10, Messages 9, I've installed Windows Defender on Windows so many times I can't count; but, recently I read an article in a magazine forgot which magazine that said Microsoft has fixed Windows Defender so it will not install on anything prior to WinXP SP2.

Alas, it is true. I just attempted it and I got that very message and it aborted. Somewhere, I also saw an article again, forgot where that gave a workaround for this and made Windows Defender install work just fine on Windows SP4.

Does anyone know where I might find instructions for this workaround? Joined Jun 13, Messages 1, IIRC, the quick scan only checks a few locations whereas the full scan scans the entire disk so there may be a file that's locked and it cannot scan. Tried this last week and the modification and installation worked perfectly. Rebooted- same result Ran Norton's Win Doctor, defragged Full scans on XP using the same definitions worked flawlessly.

I just tried this on the latest version of Defender and it still works. Installed and downloaded the definitions and it's scanning. Doing it through Defender the first time doesn't seem to work. I just installed the latest Defender on and suprisingly it immediately downloaded the updates after install. Pretty strange. About a week ago I disabled the "automatic" feature of the updates then tried a few times again to manually download and install the definition update - and had no luck installation failed.

A week or so later I tried the manual update attempt from Defender again - but this time it installed as it should have. So now things appear to be functional. Experiencing the same behavior with an XP desktop at work and one of my users called me today about his XP laptop.

Great MS, first we had the Beta 2 ver of Defender erroring out on bootup and now definitions don't install. I'd say the best fix is to uninstall this POS program Service Version: 1. Got the CLU to pause and was partially copied below. I should have mentioned that running the command line routine did not remove the definitions. Defender still can run them. This is the Definition Version that shows on the bottom of the screen in Defender: Definition version: 1. Running update again resulted in the same problem - can't install.

I ran MsMpEng. Seems pretty subborn. I've seen this happen on XP as well occasionally. I usually go to windowsupdate and download the definitions and I think it works then. IIRC, there's also a command line command you run in your Defender directory that removes all definitions and redownloads the definitions again. Windows - all updates Had old copy of Beta version and uninstalled it. Installed new Defender as you suggested.

Works fine with the initial definitions - thanks. I'm now running into trouble with the definition updates though. They load in but don't install. I get one of two errors: Installation Failure Error Code: 0xB or: The program can't install definition updates Error found: Code 0x appreciate any ideas. Yeah, a big thing about Defender from what I heard in an MS interview is that they want Defender to do it's thing behind the scenes with little intervention from the user.

I've noticed this since I barely ever get any popups from Defender but when I check out the event log there are alot of entries from Defender. Only occasionally will Defender itself popup when something really serious happens.

Of course whenever I do a full scan with Defender it never finds anything any way which is why I keep spybot installed. Dear Dosfreak, Cheers, you are such a star, I can't thank you enough.
